Purples

Purples

You are California lilacs. You gulp the light, your purpose clear as you bend toward the sun. Your colour and your certainty dazzle. But, without the emerald leaves that seek the light between your stems, your panicles would not stand out as gems. So, purples, keep on seeking light, and let your neighbours burst through in plain sight.

Geranium flight

Geranium flight

Winged creatures fly among the thicket of ferns you were born into. A geranium unsatisfied with life on a stem, you have a peacock’s fan that flutters against lacy fronds. You don’t care what the surrounding foliage thinks of your attempts at flight.

You are a flower apart from your fellows. Yet the ferns hold you in place.

You sway, rooted now, listen to the upsweep of air against your luscious petals. You remember why you wanted to take flight in the first place: to stretch your colours and touch the sky.
